Restoring Peacefulness: Step-by-Step process of Water Damage Restoration

2/20/2024 (Permalink)

Water damage, whether from burst pipes, flooding, or leaks, can be a homeowner's nightmare. Swift and effective action is essential to mitigate further damage and restore your home to its pre-water-damage condition. In this blog, we'll walk through the step-by-step process of water damage restoration, highlighting the key actions and considerations to bring back peacefulness to your living space.

  • Emergency contact
    • The first step in water damage restoration is to contact professionals immediately! Whether it’s a local restoration company or your insurance provider, swift communication is crucial to initiate the restoration process promptly. Upon arrival, restoration experts will conduct a thorough assessment and inspection of the affected areas. This involves identifying the source of the water damage, categorizing the water (clean, gray, or black), and assessing the extent of the damage to structure and belongings.
  • Water Removal
    • The next critical step is water extraction. Powerful pumps and vacuums are used to remove standing water from the affected areas. This step is essential to prevent further damage and the growth of mold and mildew. Once standing water is removed, the drying process begins. Industrial-grade dehumidifiers and high-powered fans are strategically placed to eliminate moisture from the air and surfaces. This step is crucial in preventing mold growth and secondary water damage.

  • Cleaning and Sanitizing
    • All affected surfaces, including walls, floors, and furniture, undergo thorough cleaning and sanitizing. This helps eliminate contaminants and ensures a safe living environment. Specialized cleaning agents are used to disinfect and deodorize affected areas. Water-damaged belongings are carefully removed from the affected areas. Restoration professionals assess each item, determining what can be salvaged through cleaning and restoration processes. Salvaged items are then carefully stored until the restoration is complete.

  • Structural Repairs
    • Once the affected areas are dry and clean, the focus shifts to structural repairs. This may involve repairing or replacing damaged drywall, insulation, flooring, and other structural components. Restoration experts work to restore the affected spaces to their pre-damaged condition. Water damage often creates an environment conducive to mold growth. Restoration professionals conduct thorough mold inspections, and if mold is detected, remediation processes are initiated. This involves safely removing and treating affected areas to eliminate mold spores.

  • Final Inspection
    • After completing the restoration and repairs, a final inspection is conducted. This ensures that all water damage has been addressed, structural repairs are sound, and the living environment is safe and restored. Any necessary touch-ups or adjustments are made during this phase. Throughout the water damage restoration process, restoration professionals often work closely with your insurance provider. They provide detailed documentation of the damage, the restoration process, and the costs involved. This helps streamline the insurance claims process.

  • Preventive Measures and Recommendations
    • Restoration professionals may provide recommendations for preventive measures to avoid future water damage. This could include suggestions for improving drainage, reinforcing vulnerable areas, or installing moisture detection systems. As a final step, restoration professionals often take the time to educate homeowners about maintaining a dry and safe living environment. This may involve providing tips on moisture control, prompt leak detection, and general home maintenance practices. Experiencing water damage in your home can be a stressful and disheartening ordeal. However, with the prompt and efficient execution of the water damage restoration process, your living space can be restored to its former tranquility. From emergency contact to the final inspection, each step plays a crucial role in the restoration journey. If faced with water damage, remember that professional restoration services are equipped to handle the complexities of the process, ensuring that your home becomes a restored haven once more.

Flooding in the kitchen?

6/27/2023 (Permalink)

While a small puddle under your refrigerator may look minimal as a melted ice cube, it is very important to investigate the issue to ensure your appliance isn’t damaged. There are plenty of ways to help prevent it from occurring though.

  • Make sure your fridge is flat and not tilted, when tilted it prevents the water from draining correctly.
  • Regularly check for clogs in the defrost drain or ice maker lines.
  • Clean your water dispenser once a month to prevent any build up.
  • Consider getting a water sensor, it sounds an alarm when water touches it. They can be set up in multiple places around your kitchen.
  • Regularly check for leaks in the water lines.
  • Make sure your freezer seal is intact and the door closes properly. Poor seals can cause the freezer to melt and leak out.

If water damage causes damage to your home, call our team at SERVPRO of Tacoma at 253-896-3000 to help get your home back to normal.

What to Do About Crawlspace Water

12/17/2022 (Permalink)

When you live in Tacoma, WA, finding a wet crawl space in your home may not be something you immediately think can cause problems in your home. However, if left unattended water in the crawl space can lead to foundation damage and eventual mold growth.

Reasons Crawl Spaces Get Water

While it seems like a small area to worry about, discovering water in the crawlspace is not uncommon. Finding flooding in your crawl space can happen for several reasons.

  • Broken water lines
  • Subterranean water
  • Heavy storm rains
  • Improper drainage from downspouts and gutters
  • Improper sloping of landscaping
  • Over watering of landscaping

The first two in this list are perhaps what most people think crawl space water is from. However improper drainage from spouts and landscaping, and over watering can be equally culpable, and more preventable.

How to Deal with Crawlspace Water

If you find you have a wet crawl space or potential flooding issue, it’s best to contact a professional to deal with the problem. They can assess the area containing flood water and do what's needed to take care of the problem, find the water’s source, repair any damages, and further protect your home.

Tips for Preventing Water in the Crawlspace

There are a few things you can do to help prevent flood damage in your crawl space on your own. You can grade your landscaping, so it slopes away from your home, and include irrigation or base layers into your gardens or flower beds to help direct water away as well. Also, ensure all hoses have been turned off after the watering is completed. Downspouts should include a backsplash and be angled away from the building, while regularly cleaning and maintaining gutters can help prevent water overflow that pools around the home’s foundation.

If you find you have a wet crawl space, it’s best to quickly contact a professional to discover the root of the problem. Remember, there are things you can do to protect your home as well.

Mold Remediation at SERVPRO of Tacoma

11/2/2022 (Permalink)

While we are leading remediation professionals capable of removing active mold colonies, this doesn’t address the complexities of each structure where this service is necessary. From single-family homes in King County to massive venues like the Point Defiancé Zoo, we have skilled professionals to manage:

  • Moisture Damage
  • Mold Growth
  • Harsh Malodors
  • Structural Damages

The SERVPRO team can overcome Tacoma mold damage where discovered, and we mobilize quickly to ensure that the situation does not worsen. Our microbial remediation responders arrive fast to set up containment barriers and begin mitigation actions to protect the property from more significant mold infestation concerns.

Is Mold Likely in King County?

The position of King County in the Pacific Northwest, along with expected rainfall and weather events, leaves the environment heavily saturated and humid. Improper ventilation combined with poor air quality can contribute to the development of microbial growths in a residence. With the frequency of mold damage claims and the activity of our remediation team, mold is a more significant threat to Tacoma homes than its residents might realize.

Damage Inspections and Assessment

While it is possible to identify or begin to suspect mold growth in your home without professional services, the inspection and assessment of your property are one of the initial remediation services our SERVPRO team provides. We must learn the extent of the damage, affected hosting materials, and present hazards. This information aids our crew in developing the best remediation approach to help remove active colonies.

AMRT-Certified Technicians

We are accredited through firms like the IICRC and the National Organization of Remediators and Mold Inspectors (NORMI) to manage microbial threats. Because of the multi-faceted restoration and cleanup necessary, including air duct cleaning and controlled demolition, a full-service roster of professionals ready to help like our SERVPRO team is vital to successful mold abatement.

Removing Mold Damage

The heart of the remediation process is mold removal. While we do not make broad claims to eliminate all spores from a residence, we can provide the needed work to remove active colonies and moist conditions. The remediation process often gets split into three groups:

  • Surface Cleaning – Without penetrating the outermost layer, we can use potent sporicidal products to eliminate mold and make other surfaces uninhabitable.
  • Abrasive Removal - Involves blasting or sanding to impact the space just beyond the surface layer to remove mold growth.
  • Controlled Demolition – When other methods are not efficient, our licensed professionals can remove heavily damaged building materials and discard them.

Reducing and Removing Musty Smells

Malodors are a common element of the mold growth damage a property faces. Often, musty smells indicate active colonies, helping homeowners realize a problem that must get addressed. These odors linger even after remediation nears completion, requiring more direct and focused deodorization with tools like thermal foggers and hydroxyl machines.

Where Mold Damage Repairs Are Needed

Mold can be destructive to hosting elements the colony uses as a food source. Our licensed professionals begin the reconstruction side of mold remediation in the early efforts like a controlled demolition and constructing temporary containment barriers to prevent the migration of spores. Additionally, our roster of contractors must also help with:

  • Plumbing Repairs
  • Material Replacement
  • Mold Prevention

Tacoma mold damage is often underappreciated and not as recognizable as water or fire damage concerns. Microbial threats should be treated with the same urgency and thorough cleaning as these other emergencies as they pose similar threats to the structure. Our SERVPRO of Tacoma team is ready to help when you need it at (253) 896-3000.

How To Stay Safe During a Flood

9/2/2022 (Permalink)

Storms can create unexpected circumstances in Tacoma, WA. One minute your home may be fine, but the next you have rising waters in your basement. Because the situation can change so quickly, you need to know how to stay safe during a storm-caused flood. Keep these flood safety tips in mind whenever bad weather approaches.

Stay Out of the Water

Did you know that as little as six inches of moving water can cause you to lose your balance? Because it doesn't take high waters, you need to be careful whenever you walk through any type of flood. If you must walk through a flood, keep these safety tips in mind:

  • Use a walking stick
  • Hold on to something sturdy
  • Walk quickly and cautiously

While the waters may not be moving in your house, they can still pose a safety risk. However, as a homeowner, you cannot always avoid the flooded parts of your space. You also want to avoid standing water outside of your house even if you're in your car.

Avoid Electrical Equipment

Water conducts electricity, so you want to avoid electrical equipment whenever you are in standing water. If you know there is electricity running through your basement flood, you should turn off the power to your home before anyone enters the lower levels for the best flood safety. Even if you are damp and not currently in water, you should avoid electricity.

Call for Help

Storm-caused flooding can trap you in the upper levels of your home. If you need emergency help during a storm, you should call someone as soon as you can. After the danger has passed, you may need help restoring your home. Getting in touch with storm restoration services can make your cleanup process much easier.

The heavy rains of a storm may cause flooding in Tacoma, WA. Knowing the best flood safety techniques can keep you and your home in one piece during a disaster.

Top 3 Places Mold Can Hide in Your Home

9/2/2022 (Permalink)

You may think that your Graham, WA, home is free of mold growth. However, mold can hide in many places, almost completely out of sight, and spread across drywall, flooring and even interior walls. Knowing where mold likes to hide can be the first step in targeting and wiping out this unwelcome invader before it takes a permanent hold on your home.

  1. Under Sink Cabinets

Hiding exposed plumbing with wooden cabinets can be a clever and attractive décor choice. However, if those pipes develop a slow leak that goes undetected for weeks, you may not notice it until the mold spreads enough to cause an unpleasant odor. It is wise to check your kitchen and bathroom sink cabinets at least once a month to prevent leaks and the mold that often comes with them.

  1. Under Rugs and Other Flooring

After a flood, high humidity may cause mold to grow under carpet padding and underneath laminate floors. This can occur even if you had the floors cleaned and dried. Calling in a professional flood cleanup and mold remediation company may help you deal with this issue more effectively, as its technicians can find the source of the mold, remove the damaged flooring and eradicate it there as well as on wood moldings.

  1. Inside Drywall

After a flood, mold growth can occur out of sight, behind interior walls. Not only can this affect the drywall, it might also spread to any insulation housed there. Over time, the insulation may begin to rot as the mold consumes both it and the drywall. If any room in your home suffered water damage from flooding, you may want to have your interior walls checked for moldy drywall or have your insulation replaced.

Mold growth can hide in your Tacoma, WA, home almost anywhere it finds a food source. Knowing its favorite hiding places can help you stop mold before it starts and prevent the costly damage it can cause.

Fast Water Removal Will Save Your Home

6/9/2022 (Permalink)

Western Washington residents should know that a great threat to their homes comes from outdated and rusted plumbing. If left untreated, the property can be just as damaged from a failing water heater as a severe storm.

Tacoma water removal often means getting water out of brownstones and other multi-level homes. For SERVPRO restoration teams, that means pulling water from parts of the residence where it normally does not appear, like ceiling tiles, trim, and drywall panels on the upper half of the walls if the leak source is on the second or third floor.

It made for an interesting work site in one home. A pipe rusted out in a third-story bathroom and sent water overnight down into the kitchen. As it flowed, the water-soaked the third-story rugs and wood floors in the hallways and bedrooms. It damaged ceiling panels and soaked one wall completely on the second story before getting into the kitchen, damaging more drywall.

Surprisingly, except for a cheap bookcase and a few books on the third floor, and a toaster oven in the kitchen, no furniture or other personal property was damaged. When the water reached the kitchen, there were only puddles on the linoleum.

After turning off the water and replacing the short section of pipe, SERVPRO technicians started removal operations with extraction wands. Fortunately, since the team arrived within a couple of hours after the owner woke up to the problem, they were able to draw water out of the rugs and from between the floorboards. Technicians dried the boards using air movers to direct a warm airflow over the surface without splitting or cracking them.

The home used drywall for the walls and ceilings, so team members replaced half the ceiling and one wall on the second floor. They used fans to dry out the wall frame before hanging the new panels. Other technicians performed the same work in the kitchen, removing half the ceiling and two panels on an interior wall.

At SERVPRO of Tacoma, we carefully examine each home to determine which methods and tools can best help us return it to the owner in a dry condition, safe to live in again. If your home needs our services, call us today at (253) 896-3000.

Saving Personal Items from Water Damage

6/1/2022 (Permalink)

One of the most common topics after a client suffers water damage, is how and what they can save from water damage. Unfortunately, there is no clear cut answer to this question. Every water damage is unique in some sense, so what can be saved is really on a case by case basis. However, here are some guidelines that you can use to make the best decisions possible.

What Type of Water Damage?

Determining whether the water that damaged your personal belongings is clean or contaminated will be a big factor in whether or not it can be salvaged. Obviously, if you are dealing with clean water, the chances of you being able to save some of your belongings is higher.  Even though it may be possible to restore something that is damaged by contaminated water, it is more than likely not worth the health risk that it may bring.

Porous vs Non Porous Materials

Porous materials such as fabrics, wood, and paper are very good at retaining water. This also means it increases the chance of other dangers like mold growth, and damage beyond repair. This is not always the case and if handled quickly and properly, many times these items can be saved as well. On the other hand, porous materials like marble, metal, and porcelain - among others - usually have no problem being restored. Since there is really nothing for bacteria and mold to root itself in, a simple cleaning is usually no problem.

The Amount of Time the Water Saturated

Another factor that will come into the equation of determining what can and cannot be saved is how long the materials have been wet for. The longer an item sits in water, the deeper it can penetrate. As you can imagine, this makes it increasingly more difficult to bring it back to its normal state. The perfect example of this is wooden furniture. It takes quite a bit of time for it to really absorb and become completely water logged. If you get personal belongings out of the standing water and begin the drying process right away, you have a good chance of being able to save them.

Factor in the Replacement Cost

Water damage restoration of personal belongings is no different than any other type of repair. You will always want to evaluate how much it is going to cost to repair something versus simply replacing it. Is the item you want to save really worth paying a professional to do work on it? Sometimes it is, sometimes it is not.

You should also take into account that paying for restoration does not guarantee your item will be returned to its original state. If that’s the case, you’ll have to replace the item anyways.

If you are unsure about whether or not one of your items could be salvaged, it is best that you get it analyzed by a professional. If you hire a water damage restoration company to handle a dry out of your property, they will be able to assist you in assessing damage to your personal belongings as well. To speak to a professional water restoration representative at SERVPRO of Tacoma, contact us today.  They are always there to help.

Five Common Causes to Water Damage

12/17/2021 (Permalink)

Flooding causes more than water damage. Over time, excess water can result in unwanted mold and mildew. Beginning the water damage restoration process as soon as possible is essential to a successful recovery.

SERVPRO of Tacoma understands the value of speedy and effective storm damage restoration. Their efficient commercial cleaning services in University Place restore any part of a home and prevents further issues such as mold.

Five Causes of Flooded Basements

1. Drainage Failure

Every home uses a drainage tile system to prevent water from coming in. Basement flooding is often the result of poor drainage tile installation or failure.

Severe rainstorms can weaken the integrity of a drainage system and cause basement flooding. If the basement floods immediately after a heavy storm, it is likely due to a damaged drainage tile.

2. Basement Sealing

The home’s basement sealings surround the foundation and prevent water from seeping in. Storms with strong winds and heavy rains, such as hurricanes, can affect the securing capabilities of the basement sealing.

Poor basement sealing allows water to flow into the basement and leads to flooding. A storm damage restoration team can restore the basement and secure the sealing.

3. Clogged Gutters

Gutters run along the top edges of a home to collect and direct water away from the house. Without regular cleaning, outside debris such as leaves and bugs will gather in the gutters and eventually create clogs.

A clogged gutter cannot collect rainwater, which means water runs down the side of the house and into the basement. The best way to prevent this from happening is to clean the gutters regularly. Heaving winds and rain will quickly fill up the gutters, so clearing away any debris right after a storm is essential.

4. Plumbing Problems

Plumbing problems, such as issues with the water heater or pipes, quickly lead to basement flooding. Plumbing pipes are responsible for carrying wastewater out of the house. If there is a crack or break in the pipe, water will seep out into the basement. Pipelines will break due to old age, improper water pressure, or structural failures.

Water heaters and sump pumps hold a significant amount of water and should receive regular maintenance. Although these appliances are especially useful for houses, if either of them breaks, the potential for basement flooding increases.

5. Home Location

Unfortunately, the location of the house can be a factor when it comes to basement flooding. For example, homes on top of a hill are far less likely to flood than houses in a valley.

Another factor is the weather. Homes located in areas with heavy snow or frequent rain storms have an increased chance of flooding, mainly if located near the bottom of a hill.

Whatever the cause may be, contacting a water or fire restoration company as soon as a flood occurs is the best way to minimize damage. SERVPRO of Tacoma understands that time is valuable during storm damage restoration. Their experts are always ready to provide professional commercial cleaning and water damage restoration.

Is Your Tub or Shower Leaking?

11/2/2021 (Permalink)

4 easy ways to determine if you have a leak in your bathroom.

Since bathtubs can hold many gallons of water, a bathtub leak can be a major cause of concern for a homeowner. If you suspect a leak in your bathroom, it is important to figure out where it is coming from to avoid further damage. Here are four things you can do to determine if you have a water problem in your bathroom.

1. Smell the Room
Excess water can lead to mold and mildew, both of which have musky odors. If your bathroom smells like an old carpet shortly after cleaning it, you could have mold or mildew lurking in your surroundings.

2. Look for Signs of Mold
Mold exists in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors. Regardless of the species, mold indicates a moisture problem and should be dealt with promptly. A bathtub leak can leave the floor moist, and mold can begin forming in moist areas in as little as 24-48 hours.

3. Inspect Your Shower Pan
Visually inspect your shower for obvious signs of a shower pan leak. If your shower pan looks fine, but you suspect a leak in the area, perform a shower pan test by plugging the drain and filling the pan with water. Check the water after 24-72 hours. If the water level is not the same as the original, you may have a leak in your shower pan.

4. Check for Symptoms of Water Damage
Water often leaves visible signs of damage. Common indicators of water damage include warped walls, baseboards, floors, and linoleum that is coming loose from the sub-floor.
As a homeowner, you will want to keep your home in as good of shape as possible. Since a bathtub leak can cause additional damage over time, it is important to fix any problems as soon as you notice them. A professional water remediation company can help restore your home to its pre-damaged condition as quickly as possible.

Tips to Prevent Water Damage in Your Home

9/2/2021 (Permalink)

3 Ways to Avoid Water Damage in Your Home

As a homeowner, preventing damage to your Tacoma, WA property is probably a priority for you. Stopping mishaps before they happen helps you avoid thousands of dollars in repairs and lost belongings, and this can be especially true in the case of water damage. Water in the home can be devastating to furniture, electrical systems, and your home's structure, but fortunately, there are a few steps you can take to prevent this type of problem from happening.

1. Inspect Appliance Connections and Hoses Often

Your washer and dishwasher can cause considerable flooding if worn hoses or water lines break. Leaks are usually a sign that a hose or valve is failing, so it is important to address any leak right away. Preventative maintenance can keep your water appliances running at top efficiency, stop leaks or sudden floods in your kitchen or basement and may even save you money on your energy bill.

2. Watch for Warning Signs in Your Plumbing

Drips, leaks, and discolored joints may point to a faulty or broken pipe in your bathroom or kitchen. Because malfunctioning pipes can burst without warning, this is not an issue to be ignored. Have a plumber replace worn valves, pipes, and joints or perform pipe cleanup maintenance on sections that have become narrow inside due to calcium or lime buildup, as narrow pathways can cause water pressure to build and burst your pipes.

3. Check Basements and Crawlspaces

Clogged gutters and poor drainage can cause water to seep into your basement. If you fail to spot it, it can cause mold growth and damage stored items. A professional mold remediation and restoration company can remove water in your home and inspect your basement and crawlspace for signs of excess moisture and mold.

Water damage in your Tacoma, WA home can be costly and take months to repair. However, preventative maintenance might help you avoid the kind of trouble water in a home can cause and give you peace of mind that you are protecting one of your greatest investments.

What to Look for to Prevent Water Damage

6/16/2021 (Permalink)

There is a lot to be said for having a house with a basement. Not only is it great for extra storage and a place to hide out from any severe weather threats, but it also opens up the potential to expand your home’s square footage if it is a finished area.

Overall, there are many pros to having a basement, but it is important to also acknowledge the cons that they can present.

Having a house with a basement can be a drawback when it comes to water damage. While not every basement will have water damage in its lifetime, it is something that many are notorious for due to their unique construction.

Fortunately, by being aware of the signs of water damage in the basement, homeowners can catch things before they grow out of hand. If you suspect water damage, it is important to be sure to address it as quickly as possible so you do not have a much larger issue on your plate.

Preventing Basement Water Damage By Knowing the Signs

Unpleasant, musky odors. The water that leaks into a basement is often clean water, but that does not mean that musky odors can’t still develop. Water leads to mold and mildew growth, and as the water evaporates and leaves the bacteria behind, a musty odor can develop. Oftentimes, this odor is the very first thing that homeowners notice when they have water damage on their hands.

Flaking paint on masonry or walls. Water damage can sometimes be temporarily masked with paint, which is the route that many well-intentioned homeowners take initially. While this may temporarily “solve” the problem, it is not a long-term solution by any stretch of the imagination. Water will always find its way in if there is an underlying problem, which can lead to issues with paint over time such as cracks, flakes and chips.

Foundational cracks. As temperatures fluctuate and the ground shifts and settles, it is normal for hairline cracks to develop throughout the home’s foundation. However, any cracks larger than a hairline should be immediately examined. Cracks that occur on the ceiling, walls or floor are often signs that water damage is occurring somewhere within the home and leading to damages.

If you notice any of these signs in your basement, let us take a look. Our expert water restoration technicians can help you determine what is causing these issues and how to treat it properly. Contact us today to learn more (253) 896-3000

Streamlining Recovery After a Pipe Bursts in the Home

6/16/2021 (Permalink)

When considering the various types of water damage, none of them seem like a favorable scenario—but when it comes to a burst pipe, it can be extra difficult to handle. Pipes discharge a high volume of water into an area, leading to full saturation if it is not handled quickly.

While it is impossible to predict if or when this might occur, knowing what to do in case it does is key. Annually, there will be one in 50 households that have some sort of water damage in them, and recovery tends to be much easier for those who already know exactly what to do.

A Guide to What to Do If a Pipe Bursts in Your Home

Shut off your water main. Pipes will continue to pump water after bursting, which can lead to an area becoming fully saturated. Being able to shut off your home’s water main quickly can stop the water from pouring in and prevent an area from becoming oversaturated.

Shut off your electricity. It is always good to keep water and electricity separated, so if it is safe to do so, cutting off your home’s electricity from the breaker box can prevent further issues from arising such as shock and fire risks.

Contact your restoration company. Being able to call your restoration company immediately after discovering damage is a great way to expedite the recovery process, so we always recommend choosing the one in advance so you know who to call.

Take a record of the damages. Keeping good records will help you all throughout the recovery process, especially if you are able to file an insurance claim. Taking photos, videos and keeping a list will help you stay organized and ensure nothing is forgotten.

Contact your insurance company. All insurance companies and insurance policies vary with how they handle water damage, so getting into contact with your provider quickly will help you figure out the next steps towards filing a claim.

Open windows and doors if possible. Speeding the drying and evaporation process is key to reducing the overall damages, so if it is safe to do so, open up the doors and windows near the area so you can increase airflow while you await assistance.

We Have The Right Equipment For Your Water Damage

6/1/2021 (Permalink)

Many disasters can take place inside your home or business when you least expect it. If a disaster were to happen, luckily SERVPRO of Tacoma is always ready for whatever happens. When it comes to water damage, our trained technicians have an array of specialized equipment to bring your Tacoma home back to preloss conditions. At SERVPRO of Tacoma, we use the specialized equipment to help speed up the extraction and drying process. SERVPRO of Tacoma is fully equipped with the following tools to restore any home and make it feel “Like it never even happened.”

  1. Extractors are used to provide sufficient water removal in your Tacoma home. There are several different types of extractors to use such as Truck-Mounted, Light Wands, or Stationary tools. Factors in each situation such as depth of water and available power will give the technicians a better idea of what to use.
  2. Dehumidifiers are used to remove water vapor from the air. This reduces the amount of water vapor in the air which lowers the humidity ratio. This is important because lower humidity increases the rate of evaporation of moisture.
  3. Air Movers are used in water damage restoration to enhance evaporation at the surface level and reduce drying time.
  4. Moisture Sensors are used to detect moisture in your Tacoma home’s carpets and paddings. This tool has sharp probes that penetrate through carpets and padding to determine if water has migrated on the subflooring. If there is moisture, the sensor will provide both blinking and beeping as a signal. The greater the amount of moisture, the faster the lights and beeping will become.
  5. Moisture Meters are utilized to measure the actual content or levels of various materials. This tool can be penetrative and non-penetrative depending on what needs to be measured. For example, penetrative meters will be used on carpet while non-penetrative meters will be used on drywall.

SERVPRO of Tacoma is a recognized Institution of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) firm. Every technician for SERVPRO of Tacoma is certified and knows how to utilize our unique tools to bring your home back to preloss conditions. We are a 24-hour service and are here to help you with any water damage needs you face in your Tacoma home. If you need to schedule service, please contact our office: (253) 896-3000.

Common Causes of Water Damage

8/4/2020 (Permalink)

What are the Causes of Water Damage?

Water damage comes in many shapes and sizes; some that are easy to identify and others that are not. Knowing the common causes of water damage can help to prevent future damages to your home. The earlier you can identify water damage, the less time and money will have to be spent by you.

Leaking or Burst Pipes

Leaking or burst pipes are common causes of water damage. These issues can come from changes in water pressure, temperature changes, or the deterioration of old pipes. Uninsulated pipes are vulnerable in the Winter because they can freeze and burst.

Plumbing Issues

These kind of water damage issues can be hard to detect until there is clear water damage on your walls or ceilings since pipes and hoses are usually hidden within walls. Keep an eye out on your water bill and periodically check for leaks under sinks, toilets, and around showers to find possible plumbing issues that can cause water damage.

Old or Worn Household Appliances

Did you know the average washing machine supply hose fails after just 8.7 years, and 75% of water heaters fail within 12 years? In order to prevent from cracks leading to leaks, appliance hoses should be replaced when you can see any sort of wear. This includes any other appliances that have water hookups, like refrigerators with ice makers.

HVAC Units

Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning units are also a common cause of water damage. When not maintained, moisture can build up creating water damage and an environment for mold and mildew to grow and spread around your home.

Sewage Backups

Clogs in drain lines or heavy rains can lead to sewage backup through floor drains, toilets, and sinks. It is absolutely necessary that this type of damage is handled by water damage specialists to correctly decontaminate, sanitize, and restore rooms affected by sewage water.

Now that you know several major causes of water damage in homes and businesses, you can prevent unmitigated damages to your home. But, if disaster strikes, call SERVPRO of Tacoma with any water damage issues.

No job is too big – we have the experience and resources necessary to restore your home to pre-damage conditions!

We’re open 24/7 and waiting for your call. 253-896.3000

Water Mitigation Equipment

8/4/2020 (Permalink)

AXIAL AIR MOVERS

Axial air movers are the most common “fan”. The first electric fans were axial designs based on the look and effect of windmills. They are called axial air movers because of the direction the airflow they create. Blades move around an axis, and the air moves out of the fan in the same direction.

Air volume from an axial air mover is high, while the pressure is low. Each axial air mover requires little in the way of power input, so they are highly energy efficient.

Axial air movers are often used in general-purpose use given their high-volume, low-pressure nature. This makes them great for providing comfort in workspaces and for cooling technology in tight spaces, such as servers or computers. Axial air movers are not as adept at drying or air conditioning given their low pressure, so they find less use in large water damage restoration projects.

CENTRIFUGAL AIR MOVERS

Centrifugal air movers are often referred to as blowers. They enhance an incoming airstream by the use of a fan wheel. They create a high-pressure airflow by leading the stream of air through a series of tubes and ducts. Centrifugal air movers create a steadier flow of air.

You typically find centrifugal fans in situations that require high pressure drying applications. The one drawback of choosing centrifugal fans is that they are too powerful and high-pressured for use in areas that require more modulated flow.

Think about spaces where computers need cooling or spaces where humans need airflow for comfort. In these situations, a centrifugal fan may be too much.

SERVPRO of Tacoma may use one type of air mover on a drying job or a combination depending on the situation.

Water Categories & Why they're so Important

8/4/2020 (Permalink)

Did you know that the water in your home  due to busted pipes or leaks belongs to a “category”? When it comes to handling mitigation in your home, it is better to allow the professionals at SERVPRO of Tacoma to handle the emergency. Each category of water is unique in the way it can affect your home and in the way that it needs to be taken care of.

The information below breaks down the main categories of water and how to quickly identify if water is found in your home.

Category One: Clear Water

Clear water is the cleanest, most non-toxic form of water damage. It is potable water, perhaps directly from the tap. It is unlikely to cause you any harm, even if you are exposed for some time. Nevertheless, even clean flooding can lead to electrical and structural faults, so it is safer for you to call in the experts for repairs. Clean water comes from things like a broken water supply line, tub or sinks overflow with no contaminants, appliance malfunctions involving water-supply lines to name a few. However, once clean water leaves the exit point, it might not remain clean after contacting other surfaces or materials. Although it is considered the "safest" of the categories, it can degrade to category 2 or 3 if left untreated.

Category Two: Gray Water

Gray water damage is a little bit more serious and requires a speedier removal process. This is because it may contain potentially unsafe levels of chemicals, microorganisms, or dirt. Examples of Category 2 water include, but are not limited to; overflow from dishwashers or washing machines; overflows from toilet bowls with urine; seepage due to hydrostatic pressure and broken aquariums.
If left untreated, it can quickly degrade into category 3.

Category Three: Black Water

Category 3 water is grossly contaminated and can contain pathogenic, toxigenic or other harmful agents. Cat 3 water can include, but are not limited to: sewage; toilet backflows from beyond the trap; flooding from seawater, rivers or streams, ground surface water, or other contaminated water entering the indoor environment.

The team at SERVPRO of Tacoma is skilled in the safe handling of the different categories through training and protective clothing to eliminate the risk of sickness. 253.896.3000

Rely On SERVPRO For Your Sewage Cleanup

4/23/2020 (Permalink)

Be sure you call SERVPRO of Tacoma for all residential or commercial sewage backups.

Cleaning Sewage Yourself Is Not A Smart Decision

In this day in age, you can find anything you're looking for online. A quick search will yield thousands of websites that show how to clean sewage and dirty water at home by yourself.  Every article has the same info and the same few steps. It consists of putting on gloves, removing the solid waste, using bleach on the area, and letting it dry out. You may be tempted to go this route, to save both time and money.  But if you try this, it could lead to you spending more time and money down the road if you don't call a professional company in.  your good intentions can cause many future problems.

Time And Money

If you clean up the mess on your own, it may appear that the issue is taken care of.  You can't see or smell anything, so you are satisfied. But the water component of the sewage may have soaked into your walls and flooring.  Over time, this can cause warping, discoloration, and foul odors to develop. If this happens, you will need to spend more time and money to fix the problem the right way.

Not to mention the high risk to your personal health if you are dealing with raw sewage.  Encountering the contaminated matter will expose you to harmful bacteria. When it dries, the same harmful particles will become airborne, which can cause health issues.

If you have a sewage leak or backup, call SERVPRO of Tacoma immediately.  We will respond quickly to extract the hazardous water and solids, as well as make sure that no harmful material remains afterwards.

Identifying & Treating Unseen Water Damage

4/23/2019 (Permalink)

Everyone knows that the water damage that you can clearly see is causing damage to your home is not good and should be fixed as quickly as possible. However, do you know that even the smallest water damages have the potential to cause serious structural and indoor air quality issues over time. SERVPRO Professionals have the equipment, training and experience to find and dry unseen water before secondary damages occur. Having the right equipment to use makes a significant difference when dealing with water damage. Here are a few examples of what our team uses to help any unseen water damage in your home:

Moisture Sensors are used to detect moisture in carpets, baseboards and walls.

Moisture Meters are used to determine the actual moisture content of various materials.

The moisture tester provides accurate readings, allowing SERVPRO Professionals to monitor the drying process.

Thermohygrometers measure temperature and relative humidity. When armed with this information, SERVPRO Professionals can calculate and create an environment most conducive to drying. When facing a contaminated water loss, it is not only important to dry the structure, but the structure must also be disinfected and often deodorized.

Ultra Low-Volume (ULV) Foggers will atomize liquid deodorizing agents, producing a fine mist that can easily penetrate the site where odor-causing residues may accumulate. This device can also be used to inject fungicides and disinfectants into wall cavities and other hard-to-reach areas. Thermal Foggers dispense solvent-based products by creating a dense fog. The fog consists of tiny particles of deodorant solution that attach to and neutralize odor-causing particles.

If you are having any problems dealing with water in your home or property, call SERVPRO of Tacoma at 253-896-3000 immediately so that we can help you make it “Like it never even happened.”
